From Shadow to Self-Confidence
Jelly-Nienke discovered a lump in her breast at a young age. At just 27, she visited her GP. Although the doctor initially didn't think it was anything serious, she was quickly referred for an ultrasound at the hospital. The diagnosis was shocking: she had breast cancer, which led to a mastectomy. Fortunately, Jelly-Nienke's cancer was caught early, allowing her to move forward without further treatment.
The Struggle with the Implant
Following her surgery, Jelly-Nienke opted for a breast implant. However, instead of the expected joy, she felt uncomfortable and disconnected from her body. "The implant was cold and didn't feel like me," she recalls. While it provided a sense of femininity, it also came with significant discomfort.
In 2020, inspired by the documentary 'Moordtieten' by Dionne Slagter, she decided to have the implant removed. "I hoped I could feel better again," she says. And she did! After the procedure, she felt like herself once more.
Choosing a Natural Body
Jelly-Nienke was presented with the option of reconstruction using abdominal tissue but decided against it. "I felt like myself again and didn't want to undergo reconstruction," she explains. The idea of being 'flat' was initially daunting, but it turned out to be the right choice. She now feels pure, healthy, and very much like her old self.
Prosthesis Lingerie: A New World
Initially, Jelly-Nienke had an aversion to prosthesis lingerie. The memories of old, unattractive options made it difficult. "There was little choice, and the lingerie available was outdated," she notes. "It’s fantastic that there’s increasing attention for women with prostheses," she adds. "We have more choices now, and the taboos are slowly being broken down. It’s essential to focus on our strength, beauty, and femininity."
