PCOS: What Is It and How Does It Affect Your Body?

At Savara Intimates, we believe in open and honest conversations around the topics that truly matter to women. No taboos — just understanding, support, and sisterhood. One of these topics is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that affects many women worldwide.

As part of our True Beauty, True Comfort campaign, we’re spotlighting real stories — like Lavinia’s — and diving deeper into the things that impact our bodies, confidence and wellbeing. So today, let’s talk PCOS.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries work. In many cases, ovulation is infrequent or completely absent, which can lead to irregular periods, challenges with fertility, and other physical and emotional symptoms.

Although the exact cause of PCOS isn’t always clear, hormonal imbalance — particularly involving insulin and androgens — plays a significant role.

Common Symptoms of PCOS:

• Irregular or missed periods
• Hormonal acne or oily skin
• Excess facial or body hair (often on the chin, chest or abdomen)
• Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
• Thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp
• Insulin resistance (which may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes)

Every woman’s experience with PCOS is unique. Some may only experience a few mild symptoms, while others may face more intense challenges — both physically and emotionally.

How Can You Support Your Body With PCOS?

PCOS can be overwhelming, but there are ways to support your body naturally and gently bring your hormones back into balance.

🍏 Balanced Nutrition – A diet rich in whole foods, protein, fibre, and healthy fats — and low in refined sugars — can help stabilise blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation.

🏃♀️ Gentle Movement – Activities like walking, yoga or strength training can improve insulin sensitivity and support hormonal health, without putting extra stress on your body.

💊 Supplements – Certain supplements such as inositol, magnesium, or omega-3s may offer support (always consult with a healthcare professional before starting anything new).

💖 Self-care & Stress Management – Chronic stress can worsen PCOS symptoms. Prioritise sleep, rest, and moments of joy. Be kind to yourself — your body is not your enemy.

You Are Not Alone

Living with PCOS can impact your self-image and emotional wellbeing — but remember, you are not alone. Your body is powerful, capable, and worthy of love in every phase and shape.

💬 As Lavinia, one of the beautiful women in our True Beauty campaign, shared:
"I don’t need a perfectly toned body to be worthy of a photoshoot. I joined to celebrate my body — soft belly and all. PCOS made me realise how strong I truly am."

At Savara Intimates, we celebrate real beauty. Not just in how we look, but in how we care for ourselves and each other.
